Not many locals would hit the open water in November, but 15-year-old Gideon Koehring does it for sport.
Koehring, a sophomore at Haywood Early College, was one of four rowers in a boat that competed at the Head of Hooch Regatta — the second largest rowing regatta in the world — on Sunday, Nov. 5, in Chatanooga, Tennessee.
Koehring’s boat placed second out of 33 entries in the Men’s Novice Four division, earning a silver medal. The other members of his team were Jack Fleming, the crew’s coxswain, Mason Heth, stroke seat, Maddox Linen, two seat and Levi McCormack, bow seat.
Koehring is a member of Asheville Youth Rowing Association which conducts a program training at Lake Julian.
